The thing about where we live, you either embrace winters, or you move. Laramie sits at over 7200 ft in elevation, which lays in a valley in between two mountain ranges. Annually it usually feels like we have two seasons. 9 months of winter, and 3 months of summer. However this year we were blessed with a normal spring. To the west is the Snowy Range Mountains, a winter wonderland, offering an escape for those seeking tranquility and adventure amidst snowy landscapes. Camping in the Snowy Range Mountains is a truly amazing experience, where the crisp mountain air, glistening snow, and majestic peaks create a serene setting for an unforgettable winter camping trip. Join me as we dive into the allure of camping in this picturesque mountain range.
Safety First
Winter camping requires vigilance, awareness ,and preparedness. Winter camping is not for everyone, it is a challenge, but so worth it. Stay informed about weather forecasts, avalanche risks, and trail conditions. Carry essential safety equipment, such as avalanche gear, first aid supplies, and communication devices. You must be able and willing to self-rescue, as the chance of help being able to reach you is minimal.
Winter Camping Essentials
Before embarking on a winter camping trip, preparation is key and ever so important. Packing essential gear is imperative. Gear designed to withstand harsh winter conditions, like a warm and moisture-resistant sleeping bags, insulated sleeping pads, and appropriate winter clothing to stay cozy during chilly nights.

Choosing the Perfect Campsite
Selecting the ideal campsite is essential for a successful winter camping experience. Look for sheltered areas shielded from strong winds and with a picturesque view of the surrounding snow-capped peaks. Avoid camping near avalanche-prone areas and be aware of potential hazards.

Gather around the campfire (or stove) with fellow campers, share stories, and savor hot cocoa as the flames dance and provide warmth against the winter chill. Campfire bonding fosters camaraderie and leaves lasting memories of laughter and friendship.
Respecting the Mountain
I shouldn't have to say this, but I'm going to. While visiting this pristine wilderness, it's crucial to follow Leave No Trace principles. Respect the ecosystems, avoid disturbing wildlife, and carry out all trash to leave the mountains as untouched and beautiful as you found them.
